Leader of the Opposition Statement 2010
Message of support for the National Day of Thanksgiving 2010.
Since its inception in 2004, the National Day of Thanksgiving has been an important gesture of appreciation to members of our community whose efforts often go unacknowledged.
Saying thank you is a simple act, but one too often overlooked.
This year, I particularly thank Australians engaged in small business. Small business people are the backbone of the Australian economy. Our shopkeepers, builders, hairdressers, sole traders, plumbers and electricians provide us with vital services and are often our employers.
I would also like to extend my gratitude to Australia’s primary producers. In recent years, many of our farmers have suffered considerable hardship through drought, but it is a testament to their resilience that Australia still boasts some of the highest quality produce in the world.
I wish to thank the volunteers who generously sacrifice their time and effort to make the National Day of Thanksgiving the successful event that it is and encourage all Australians to support this worthwhile initiative.
Yours sincerely,
Tony Abbott 10 May 2010
